09- Composition Part 3- Depth

Photographs are 2 dimensional images. They have a width and height. It is up to the photographer to create DEPTH.

There are several ways to fool the mind into recognizing depth. In this example we will use “apparent size”. We see the lamp posts in this photo are clearly not all the same size. However, our mind knows that in reality they are all the same size. Therefore the logical conclusion is that they are gradually getting further away. Hence, we get the feeling of depth. It all happens very fast and without even realizing it.

A similar idea comes to us in the form of converging lines. When we see a railroad track or a road narrow our mind automatically assumes that it is off in the distance.
